Basel is getting ready for major inclusive events
The world is looking to Basel in 2025: With the Eurovision Song Contest ESC in May and the UEFA Women's Euro in July, Basel is hosting two major events with an international character. Volunteers therefore collect accessibility information from locations in advance.
Accessibility of major events
Major events such as the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) or UEFA Women's Euro 2025 attract many visitors, including people with disabilities or reduced mobility in the broadest sense: families with strollers, travelers with luggage, elderly people. But not every building, offering or event infrastructure is immediately accessible to them.
In order to be able to plan and prepare for the travel and participation of this group of people in advance, differentiated information is needed about the accessibility of Basel's infrastructure: Which hotel in the city center offers barrier-free rooms? Is there a lift in the stadium that takes me to the top floor? Can the live broadcast on Barfüsserplatz also be attended with a wheelchair? Which café near the venue offers enough space for a visit with a stroller?

Traveling together for an accessible Basel
The aim of this project is to make a concrete contribution to making the venues around the ESC and UEFA Women's Euro 2025 in Basel accessible to the broadest possible target group, including people with disabilities.
In the run-up to the two major events, volunteers will therefore collect accessibility information from restaurants, hotels, public transport stops and other locations around the most important event venues as part of a mapathon on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
The recording is carried out by small teams of volunteers using the free GINTO app. For volunteers, participation in Mapathon means a formative and active experience that is fun and at the same time raises awareness of the issue of inclusion.
This campaign is supported by Basel tourism, the Swiss Barrier-Free Friends Association with the OK:GO initiative, the Emma Schaub Foundation and the Swisslos Fund Canton of Basel-Stadt.
